GO-ESSP 2007 practical information
You will find below some information about the GO-ESSP 2007 Paris
meeting, from Monday June 11th to Wednesday June
13th. This page will be regularly updated till the actual
meeting.
If you find some errors/typos or want to post some extra information
relevant to the meeting, please get in touch with Jean-Yves
Peterschmitt.
Location
The workshop will take place in the Pierre et Marie Curie
University (more commonly known as Jussieu. Also sometimes
listed as Denis Diderot University on some maps...). The university is
conveniently located in the center of Paris, in the
5ème arrondissement (5th
district, zip code 75005), that is part of the Quartier
Latin area.
The nearest métro station (right in front of the University,
and 2-3 minutes walk from the meeting room) is Jussieu, on
métro lines 7 and 10.
You can click here to get an online map of the Jussieu area.
Getting to Jussieu from...
[ Paris
métro/RER map ]
You can get tickets and route information on the SNCF and RATP
(SNCF and RATP are the public transports operators in the Paris
area).
The directions you get from the RATP and SNCF online route finders can
be a bit confusing so, unless you know what you are doing, the easiest
ways to get to Jussieu are listed below. And then you have to hope
that you will not be delayed by a strike (grève),
suspicious abandonned luggage (colis suspect), suicide
(incident de personne), severe storm
(intempéries), ... :-)
- From Roissy Charles de Gaulle (CDG) airport, option
1:
take any southbound (i.e. towards Paris) RER B till you reach
the St-Michel Notre-Dame station. There, make a connection to
métro line 10 going to Gare d'Austerlitz and
exit at the Jussieu station.
Note: try to catch a direct/faster RER B train from the airport to
Paris (there should be -almost- no stop before your reach the Gare
du Nord station in Paris).
Note: getting back to CDG from Paris. Not all northbound RER trains go
to the airport (there is a fork before the airport)... You have to
make sure that your train goes to Aéroport Charles de
Gaulle!
- From Roissy Charles de Gaulle (CDG) airport, option 2 (if
you want to be a bit more comfortable because you have spent a bad
night on the plane, and you don't mind being stuck in a traffic jam,
or you arrive on Sunday when there is no traffic jam):
take the Roissybus from CDG to Place de
l'Opéra (in the center of Paris), then catch
métro line 7 in front of the Opéra
building. Ride a southbound métro (heading towards
Villejuif Louis Aragon or Mairie d'Ivry) and exit at
the Jussieu station.
- From Orly (ORY) airport:
take the Orlyval train to the Antony
station. There, take any northbound (i.e. towards Paris) RER
B till you reach the St-Michel Notre-Dame station. Then
make a connection to métro line 10 going to Gare
d'Austerlitz and exit at the Jussieu station.
Note: getting back to Orly from Paris. Not all southbound RER trains
go to Antony (there is a fork before Antony)... You have to make sure
that your train stops at Antony (the final destination of the train
should be Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse)!
Buying RER/métro tickets:
You can buy tickets in any RER/métro station. The vending
machines will take credit cards and coins. If you plan to move around a
bit in Paris, but know that you will not have much time (because of a
very interesting workshop), you can buy a carnet de tickets (10
tickets at 20% off the base price, that will allow you to travel
downtown).
Note: you can go as far as you want, and make connections in the
métro. But you will need one ticket for each bus you take (and
you can't go from bus to métro or métro to bus with the
same ticket)!
Public transports around Jussieu
The map below shows some RER and métro lines around
Jussieu. Click on it to get a bigger version. Once you are in Paris,
you can get the full for free in any métro/RER station (ask for
map number 2 'Paris Grand Plan Lignes et
Rues').

Finding the meeting room in Jussieu
The GO-ESSP workshop will take place in the Astier Lecture Hall
(Amphi Astier), on the ground level of the Esclangon Building
(Bâtiment Esclangon). From the Jussieu
métro station, walk to the university main gate, then turn
right after the gate and walk to the Esclangon building (see maps
below).
Note: you may think that the outside doors of the Esclangon building
are locked (especially if you get there early on Monday morning), but
they are just very heavy! :-)

Important information
Powerpoint file names
We will probably use the same laptop to run all the powerpoint
files, and then make the files available to the meeting participants
and (unless you specify otherwise) the rest of the world.
In order to make this easier, please use the following name template
for your files:
go-essp_2007_dayD_last-name_NN_vMM.ppt
where
- D is 1, 2 or 3
- NN is the index of your talk (e.g. if you give
two talks during the whole workshop, use 1 and 2)
- MM is the version of your file (we will of course keep
only the last version)
Please, give us also an accompanying text file with the metadata
info of the talk (title, your full name, institution, and any extra
relevant information like 'Do not distribute to non-participants',
...) :)
go-essp_2007_dayD_last-name_NN.txt
Network access
We will be able to connect the laptop used for the talks (or your
own laptop) to the network (100 Mbit), if you want to chance a live
demo.
There will be wifi access in the meeting room. You will get
configuration instructions and a login/password when you arrive.
Security information
The workshop will take place in a freely accessible university
building and you will not have to show any ID and/or fill
paperwork. The drawback is that the security of your belongings will
not be guaranteed... The meeting room will be locked during the lunch
breaks, but you are advised to keep your belongings in sight! Bringing
a kensington lock (or similar) to secure your laptop would be a good
idea.
Miscellaneous
- The technical staff of the university should install extra power
strips in the meeting room, but it is up to you to bring whatever
gizmo you usually use to connect to French power outlets... :-)
Lodging information
The Jussieu University has no special lodging agreement with the
hotels in the area, and the GO-ESSP meeting committee has not booked
any hotel room for the participants.
Each participant has therefore to take care of her/his own hotel
reservation! Do not wait till the last minute, because June is a busy
season in Paris and the hotels in the area around Jussieu can be
expensive... Besides, the hotels will be busy, because the final of Roland
Garros 2007 will take place on Sunday, June 10th.
Useful tips
- It is more convenient to stay in walking distance of Jussieu (and
it is a nice and typical area of Paris, near lots of museums and
interesting places to visit). Otherwise, using the métro is
very easy and cheap, and a métro ride takes at most 2 minutes
between 2 stops (not including the connections). Métro stations
are never far from one another (this is not London :p), 2-5 minutes by
foot.
- It is now forbidden to smoke inside public places in France, but
it is still a good idea to explicitely request a non-smoking/smoking
room.
- If you make a reservation for a double room and you want 2 beds,
you should explicitely request 2 beds.
- You should not expect air conditionning in all the hotels...
- Most hotels where I asked had paying wifi access... but
you will have free wifi access in the GO-ESSP meeting
room.
- Breakfast is not included in the hotel rate. The price seems to be
around 10 euros, so if you feel adventurous you might as well find a
bakery or a bar between your hotel and the meeting room (you can count
on at leat one bakery every 200 meters!).
- Taxes may or may not be included in the hotel rates, so better
ask...
- ...
A few hotels...
There are lots of hotels around Jussieu. I (Jean-Yves) had a quick
look at a few of them in March (I selected the ones that were offering
the cheapest rates in the area, in the middle of June). You will find
below a short list of cheap (not that cheap, and they rate
only 2-3 stars!) hotels. Of course, I can't guarantee the quality of
service or anything...
- Best Western Quartier Latin, 71 rue Monge, 75005
Paris
This hotel is next to the Monge métro station, and a 5-10
minutes walk from Jussieu. The manager was very helpful and has
offered me 10 rooms at interesting rates. The following rates include
taxes AND breakfast (breakfast would cost 13 euros otherwise) and you
can get them by sending a mail directly to the manager (Isabel Feral,
iferal@my-paris-hotel.com). Note:
if you want to get the special rate, you have to get in touch
directly with the manager by email (do not make an online reservation
through the Best Western link above).
1 person = 125 euros/night, 2 persons (have to specify the number of
beds... If someone is interested, 1 kid under 12 stays for free. Add
30 euros for an older kid) = 135 euros.
Closest Métro station : Place Monge (line 7), then
Jussieu (line 10 and line 7).
- Timhotel Jardin des Plante, 5 rue Linné,
75005 Paris
This hotel is very close to Jussieu and I was told (by the manager of
the BW Quartier Latin above, who used to be the manager there) that it
has been recently remodelled.
Closest Métro station : Jussieu (line 10 and line
7), then Place Monge (line 7).
- Hôtel Vendôme Saint Germain, 8 rue
d'Arras, 75005 Paris
This hotel is close to Jussieu. This hotel is simpler looking than the
others, but is also cheaper (and claims to have free wifi access). I
had a look at two rooms that did not seem to have any problem.
Closest Métro station : Cardinal-Lemoine (line 10),
then Jussieu (line 10 and line 7).
Hotel reviews
You can look at the hotel reviews on Trip Advisor. If
you know an hotel name, enter it directly in the search field at the
top of the page...
Finding rooms with Expedia
The rates I saw on expedia where usually more interesting than the
rates I got directly from the hotels. But each hotel usually offered
only 1-2 rooms on Expedia... If the expedia web site says that there
is no room left in the hotel where you really want to stay, you can
still try to get in touch directly with the hotel.
- Go to www.expedia.com
- In the Build your trip section, select Hotel,
Paris, the apropriate dates (June 9th to June
13th?), then Search for hotels.
- Select Latin Quarter in the Show hotels in this
area pull-down menu, then Go.
- Then Sort by: Price (you can of course sort by Hotel Class
as well, depending on your per diem! :).
- Then good luck and see you in Paris!
