Ocean Carbon-Cycle
Model Intercomparison Project

Global Analysis,Interpretation and Modelling International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme Joint Global Ocean Flux Study

Brief history

The Ocean-Carbon Cycle Model Intercomparison Project (OCMIP) is a research initiative of IGBP/GAIM and IGBP/JGOFS. It was initiated in 1995 to develop an international collaboration to improve the predictive capacity and accelerate development of global-scale, three-dimensional, ocean carbon-cycle models through standardized model evaluaion and model intercomparison.

After a 3-year pilot study with 4 models (OCMIP-1), a second phase with 13 modeling groups and data specialists took on a more detailed effort during 1998-2002 (OCMIP-2). Work continues to exploit the OCMIP-2 model output archive. In addition, OCMIP-3 has been launched. It includes three new funded activities: modeling interannual variability, ocean inverse-basis modeling, and automating model-data comparison.
